If you're a diver and you like to roll out of bed and be at the dive shop then this place is for you. Dive Palancar was great - very helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. However, if you're not a diver then you may want to research other locations, especially if you're into food. The food quality was average at best and inedible at worst. Their  buffets were uninspired, bland, and limited. I've had TV dinners with more flavor. And the reservation-only restaurant system was frustrating and obnoxious. And once you got a reservation the food was not worth the bother. Lastly, the hotel management made odd decisions - like having the entire grounds under construction during peak vacation times. All-in-all, if you're picky or expect a 5-star experience do not go here. This is a 3-star at best.

A really nice smaller resort. Beach was beautiful and diving first class. The food was good in the buffets and daytime beach restaurant but the restaurants you had to reserve, the food was not much different than what you get in the buffet. We were there during Christmas week and although it was enough for us, we did feel a lack of presence in staff  at the hotel. The pool bar was only served by one bar man and closed at 5pm in the evenings so there was always a line for a drink. You needed at least two people at the bar at all times and have it close a little later, after all we are on holiday and it was Christmas. The evening entertainment was just OK. bigger resorts have better entertainment so you did not have much to do after dinner with the kids. The rooms were OK but very musty and damp not sure why. Over all the hotel was a nice relaxing time but if you want more fun I suggest you book into a larger resort. The diving is top rated here though and the dive shop was right on the beach at the resort so it was really great. It is considered a 4 star but I would rate this a 3.5. Need some improvements

Overall the Occidental Grand is good value for your money. This hotel was chosen by our family as the place to stay during the Ironman Triathlon event held in Cozumel. The spacious rooms are clean and attractive, especially the lovely washroom with its spacious shower, large countertop and closet space, plus has a bathtub if needed. The grounds are  quite nice, set in a jungle like environment. We loved the sandy beach and the water was so clean and clear. Although there were plenty of beach chairs available, the chairs were not the most comfortable, as they did not fold down flat to allow a more relaxed position to enjoy the sun. We don't understand the negative reviews as we found the staff very friendly and helpful and showed interest in providing good service. We would rate the buffet food as good although not exceptional. The service and food at the specialty restaurants was very good. Overall it was an enjoyable stay.

I liked the buildings of the hotel the rooms and the restaurants looked great. The beach is nice and all the Iguanas running around were fun. The place is in a forest which i like but you do need bug spray at night. The food was terrible though. They could not get it right. We were in Mexico and all they need is some authentic Mexican food and I would  be happy. But they try to get fancy and have a Chinese buffet which is just meat and vegetables soaked in tons of soy sauce. And the deserts were left around for a while and tasted like cardboard. And they don't let you check in until 3:00pm.

Grönt och fint hotellområde och stora fina rum men utsikten är bara djungel. Två bra tennisbanor. Mycket bra strand, bad och snorkling. Liten pool och trångt runt om. Få strandstolar. Restauranterna var ganska bra. Strandbaren (lunch) enkel men trevlig. Bra dykcenter brevid med fina utflykter. Dottern var också ute och red men det var lite lamt på stigar  i djungeln.

Bring bug spray first of all! Then you can enjoy yourself. The beds were hard, but the rooms nice. Food pretty good with decent options. Wish there was a bar at the "relaxing pool". The bridge to and from the beach is in need of work and the water coming onto the beach is nowhere near as beautiful as the ocean really is. Overall, I would say it was good for the money!

This hotel is a twenty minute drive from the airport. It is in a quiet and private setting. The food was good but not great. The beds were all very firm. They tried to soften them up by placing blankets and bed spreads on top of the matress pad. All the employees were very friendly and helpfull. The snoreling at this inland was my biggest disappointment, due to the hurricane damage a few years ago. There is no coral or reefs along the shore. So all you see is sand and a few fish. We took a snorkel boat tour and went to three sites. This was nice and we did see some coral and reefs areas, however they were small spots and were nothing to compare to the areas were seen in Maul. I wish I had taken the scooba classes offered by the hotel to become certified, as I think the diving areas were not effected by the huricane and would have been worth seeing. The hotel had nightly entertainment which was very nice and worth your time to see. Other than the disapointment on the snorkeling I thought this was a very good place to go for a quiet and safe vacation getaway.

This was our (my fiance and me) 'fancy' and most expensive all-inclusive on our trip. We thought it would be the best...Nope. We left after one night, and went up the street to Park Royal-Excellent! I would not recomend this hotel to anyone and here is why: The service is not very customer-oriented. The grounds are highly under-staffed, and for the most part, not bi-lingual. For our three night stay, you only get ONE ala-carte meal! Unbelievable! The room was comparable to an upgraded best-western. Buffet food was lowsy. The nightly 'show' was pittiful. The dive shop was expensive, and not helpful. They planed the dive on a 'democratic' vote on-the-boat of where to dive...not very professional. Highly-NOT-recomend any Occidental Hotel. Please save yourself the time/stress and go to the Park Royal. You will your stay to be much much more supperior!

I stayed in Occidental in the beginning of November of '08. The location was great, away from neighboring hotels, fifteen minutes from town, in a protected national park. The on premise diving was excellent, the beach was beautiful. Not crowded, the service was amazing as well. I sat at the beach under my umbrella and the waitress came around every so often to refresh my drink. The food was pretty good considering it was all inclusive. Didnt get a chance to check out the reserve only restaurant. my only complaint was that the lobby computers were at a high charge, 5 dollars for fifteen minutes, I feel that service should be at no extra charge. and the room t.v. didn't work well with only a limited number of channels. But if you don't care about television while on vacation then my last issue is pointless. I was pleasantly surprised and would go back again. Oh yeah one more thing, the grounds were beautifully landscaped.
